The Phive - Free Daily Sports Bets (8/11)
Back to our regularly scheduled programming. If you didn't check out my preview of the NHL playoffs, be sure to do so. The playoffs start tomorrow so you still have time to get some futures in.
Coming up with five bets right now is just about impossible. The NBA is a mess. We find out what players aren't playing mere hours before tip-off and that has made it too hard to make educated decisions the night before. Even "On The Card" this morning I was all about the Thunder, then I find out mid-episode that they're benching everyone. I was too stubborn to back off, but hey, live and learn.
Here's where we stand right now.
Record to this point:
Total 30-20 (2-5)
NBA 20-9 (1-1)
MLB 5-4 (0-1)
NHL 3-4 (0-2)
MLS 2-3 (1-1)
Futures in the mix:
Trail Blazers 8-seed (+400) - 9th place, 1.5 games back of Memphis
Since the NBA is so unpredictable right now, I'm going to stick to the NHL today.
First, I'm taking a look at the Knights and the Blackhawks. I can't help myself. I'm taking the over. It's currently at 6.5, but I don't care. Both of these teams score. The Blackhawks goalie play has been questionable at best, and I expect this game to produce numerous opportunities. You could probably wait until tomorrow to get in on this one and get it for a better number, considering right now the over is actually +100, but I like this one so much, I'm going to take it now.
BET: VGK/CHI over 6.5 (+100)
Now that I got the dog out of the way, I'm going to go ahead and eat the juice on a favorite with the Lightning taking on the Blue Jackets. I've seen this ML for Tampa Bay anywhere from -160 to -175. Shop around and find the best number for you, but the Lightning are going to win this game. They have to. If they don't, they're going to have some serious soul searching to do. Remember, the Blue Jackets swept them last season in the first round of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets are coming off an absolutely brutal series against Toronto. I like the Lightning to have their way here and get it done.
BET: Tampa Bay Lightning <(-175)
I'm going to take a wait and see approach on the other games, but if I was going to do anything else, I would take the Hurricanes against the Bruins. Right now, the number simply isn't enticing enough. +118 for an underdog isn't big enough to take a chance on a team that is playing the team with the best regular-season record in the league. Let's wait and see what happens with the Bruins against a lesser opponent. But if they lose this one, I'm all in on the Hurricanes taking it to them the rest of the series.
SURPRISE! It's the MLS!
I couldn't stay away. This is my last chance to place a bet on the MLS. Yes, their regular season is going to be coming up shortly, but I will not be watching a single game, so I will not be betting. But tomorrow night, we're getting a championship game in a tournament, and I just simply can't hold back.
I like Orlando City to get the job done and take down the Portland Timbers. They do it for the home crowd, much the way they have done everything in this bubble for their hometown. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic. Anyway, they've been the better team in all of their games, so why expect the magic to end now.
BET: Orlando City to win the trophy (-125)
I also like the over in this game. Both teams create scoring opportunities and I'm looking for a goal early that really opens up the game. Both of these teams won their semifinal games by a final of 2-1, so I'd look for this game to have a similar result. No matter who falls behind, this game is going to be wide open.
BET: Total goals over 2.5 (-130)
That's all I have for today's edition of The Phive. Like I said, I'm avoiding the NBA because who is playing is just too unpredictable.
